Global algorithmic trading firm Wintermute identified downward stabilization in U.S. Treasury yields and a shift to net inflows for spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) as key prerequisites for a sustained rebound in the cryptocurrency market. While traditional equity markets have continued to rise on the back of solid corporate earnings, the crypto market has entered a period of stagnation after losing momentum from new capital inflows, it said.
Wintermute assessed that, until these two macroeconomic and flow-related conditions are met, Bitcoin is more likely to behave as a high-beta risk asset closely linked to traditional equity-market movements than to mount an independent uptrend. It therefore warned against aggressively chasing lower-tier altcoins with weak fundamentals during short-term technical rebounds. However, it maintained an optimistic outlook, noting that market-participation indicators such as public interest in Bitcoin and search volumes remain below their historical long-term trend lines. This suggests that the current phase is still at an early stage of the upward cycle and that room for additional gains over the medium to long term remains.
The release of the U.S. September consumer price index (CPI) was identified as the most important macroeconomic variable for determining short-term price direction. Wintermute explained that whether the recent rebound in energy prices feeds through to core inflation could directly affect the Federal Reserve’s monetary-tightening stance and the outlook for future interest rates. In addition, quarterly earnings reports from major Wall Street financial institutions and leading artificial intelligence (AI) companies, which will gather pace this week, are expected to serve as key indicators of liquidity sentiment across risk-asset markets.
