IonQ unveils 256-qubit ‘Superion 256’… “Not currently a threat to BTC”

U.S. quantum computing company IonQ has unveiled its next-generation 256-qubit platform, “Superion 256,” but the technology at its current stage does not pose a threat to Bitcoin’s security, Decrypt reported.

IonQ announced Superion 256 as its sixth-generation quantum computing platform on September 8 and began accepting orders. Customer deliveries are expected to begin in 2027. However, no results demonstrating the performance of a fully operational 256-qubit system have been made public so far.

Attacking Bitcoin’s secp256k1 cryptographic system with a quantum computer would require a much larger fault-tolerant system capable of reliably running Shor’s algorithm while correcting errors. The figure of 256 qubits does not mean that 256-bit cryptography can be decrypted directly.

In a separate study, IonQ also estimated that approximately 20,000 physical qubits would be required to decrypt Bitcoin’s secp256k1 signatures, and said that no quantum computer currently exists that can carry out such an attack.
