Bitcoin Surges Past $86,000 to Eight-Month High as Short Liquidations Drive Leverage Spike

Bitcoin surged to around $86,000, reaching its highest price level in eight months. The move came after it broke above the $82,000 area, which had acted as a strong resistance level since August, triggering large-scale liquidations of bearish bets in the futures market.

Approximately $750 million in bearish positions were reportedly force-liquidated during the price surge. Buyback orders resulting from the liquidations further strengthened the upward momentum, while about $2 billion in new leveraged positions were added to the futures market after the resistance break. In particular, open interest in the futures market increased faster than Bitcoin’s spot price, indicating a rapid return of leveraged capital.

Market experts said caution is warranted because the rebound has relied heavily on a short squeeze and bets in the derivatives market. Nicolai Sondergaard, a senior analyst at on-chain data analytics firm Nansen, assessed that although the price had risen sharply in a short period, the actual positioning of market participants had not yet fully shifted back into a broad-based bullish phase. He added that sustained spot buying and continued inflows into exchange-traded funds would be necessary for the rally to remain durable.

Analysts pointed out that if derivatives leverage rises rapidly without sufficient support from actual spot demand, Bitcoin could give back its gains in full in response to higher government bond yields or an unexpected geopolitical shock. The market is watching the $87,000 and $90,000 levels as key resistance zones and important price indicators going forward.
