A total of 22% of U.S. adults have owned or used cryptocurrency, but the actual usage rate over the past year stood at 13%.

According to a survey conducted by Ipsos at the request of the DeFi Education Fund, the share of respondents who had owned or used cryptocurrency rose to 22% this year from 18% in 2025. Meanwhile, 13% said they had used cryptocurrency during the past 12 months, unchanged from last year.

The share who said they were likely to own or use cryptocurrency in the future was also similar to last year, at 17% versus 16%.

Only 19% said the existing financial system is safe, while 63% said the system needs to be improved to address new threats such as cybercrime and AI.

However, trust in cryptocurrency-related services was low. Just 4% said they had a high level of trust in cryptocurrency exchanges, compared with 5% for decentralized platforms and 42% for large national banks. The survey was conducted among 1,545 U.S. adults from September 8 to 16.
