U.S. National Sheriffs’ Association Withdraws Opposition to CLARITY Act, Adopts Neutral Position

The National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA), a major U.S. law enforcement organization, has withdrawn its opposition to the CLARITY Act, a digital asset market structure bill, and adopted a neutral position.

According to a report by Semafor on September 4, the NSA said in a letter to lawmakers, “Given the complexity of the bill and important details that are still under review, we are changing our position on the CLARITY Act to neutral.” It added, “We believe it is most appropriate to step back and allow the legislative process to proceed.”

The NSA had previously opposed the CLARITY Act, arguing that certain provisions could provide broad exemptions to entities involved in decentralized finance (DeFi), weaken anti-money-laundering and know-your-customer requirements, and limit law enforcement agencies’ ability to investigate illicit finance. The NSA also sent letters to the Senate in May and August outlining related concerns.
