Binance said it estimates the losses from the recent hacking incident at approximately $6.3 billion, and that it has so far frozen assets worth about $3 billion.
According to Binance’s preliminary investigation, the incident may have begun when the laptop of a DevOps engineer responsible for managing development and operations systems was compromised. The attacker is believed to have used this access to enter internal systems where services were running and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions.
Binance said it has so far found no evidence that wallet private keys were leaked. In cooperation with partners in the blockchain industry, it has frozen approximately $3 billion worth of affected assets on-chain and is also working with law enforcement agencies and blockchain analytics firms to trace and recover the funds.
Binance said it plans to compensate for all losses using the SAFU fund and company funds, emphasizing that user assets are safe. During the security review, it temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals and revoked permissions associated with the affected addresses. It plans to release a detailed technical report after completing the investigation.
