U.S. market analyst Jesse Eckel argued that advances in artificial gold production technology could, over the long term, highlight Bitcoin’s competitive advantage in scarcity.
On the 21st, Eckel said on X, “Gold made in laboratories will eventually become as cheap as synthetic diamonds,” adding that “laboratory-made Bitcoin will never exist.”
His comments came after San Francisco-based startup Marathon Fusion announced that it had converted mercury into real, stable gold. Marathon Fusion claimed that the experiment exceeded CERN’s previous record by 10 times.
In 2025, Marathon Fusion presented a theoretical process capable of producing approximately 5,000 kilograms of gold annually at a gigawatt-scale nuclear fusion power plant. However, current technology has not yet reached the stage where gold can be mass-produced at commercially low prices.
