Vitalik Buterin Rejects Shapira’s ‘50% Bitcoin Crash’ Argument: AI Poses No Fundamental Security Threat

When Silicon Valley investor Liron Shapira argued that there was a 50% probability Bitcoin would fall by more than 50% within two years because of AI-related security threats, Vitalik Buterin countered that the possibility of Bitcoin’s fundamental security being compromised was extremely remote.

Liron Shapira, a Silicon Valley investor and host of the podcast Doom Debates, raised the possibility of a sharp decline in Bitcoin’s price due to advances in artificial intelligence (AI).

Shapira pointed out that AI could weaken the network security investors expect and claimed that the probability of Bitcoin’s price falling by more than 50% over the next two years was as high as 50%.

In response, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin expressed the opposite view, saying AI would not threaten Bitcoin’s fundamental security system.

Buterin presented two scenarios. The first involved network-level attacks that AI could create, which he said could be addressed through upgrades to client software and infrastructure.

The second was the possibility that Bitcoin’s hash algorithm or proof-of-work system could completely fail. Buterin assessed that the likelihood of such a situation occurring was extremely remote.

Buterin also said that approximately 90% of his total net worth was invested in crypto assets, adding that this demonstrated his firm confidence in cryptocurrency security and the ecosystem.
